Eva Bjorg Aegisdottir: Girls Who Lie

Today I am delighted to be sharing my review of Girls Who Lie as part of the blog tour. My review is written with thanks to Anne Cater for inviting me to take part.

Blurb:

When single mother Maríanna disappears from her home, leaving an apologetic note on the kitchen table, everyone assumes that she’s taken her own life…until her body is found in the Grábrók lava fields seven months later, clearly the victim of murder. Her neglected 15-year-old daughter, Hekla, has been placed in foster care, but is her perfect new life hiding something sinister?

Fifteen years earlier, a desperate new mother lies in a maternity ward, unable to look at her own child, the start of an odd and broken relationship that leads to a shocking tragedy. Police officer Elma and her colleagues take on the case, which becomes increasingly complex, as the number of suspects grows and new light is shed on Maríanna’s past – and the childhood of a girl who never was like the others….

Review:

After reading A Creak On The Stairs last year, I had hoped there would be more to come from this author and I wasn’t disappointed. It was great to catch up with Elma again. She has a wonderful relationship with Saevar and is managing her own demons and I enjoyed reading as these aspects of her character developed.

There are lots of suspects and the characters are developed so well that I had no chance of guessing who had done what and nearly everyone has reason or opportunity to be involved. There are several shorter chapters told in first person. The reader gets to know the character who narrates these chapters really well and I went through several emotions: anger, sadness and sympathy as I read them.

I’m finding it really hard to write this review without spoilers but I am in awe of the plotting in Girls Who Lie. I loved that there are so many small details that seem insignificant in the beginning but later make sense as the plot comes together. Towards the end of the novel, the tension really goes up a notch and I really wanted to know what had happened to Marianna.

Girls Who Lie is available from Amazon.
