Today I’m joining the blog tour for Ashes Of Innocence. I’m sharing my Q&A with the author with thanks to Zoe O’Farrell and the team at Spellbound Books for inviting me on the tour and to Phil Price for answering my questions!

Have you always wanted to write?

No. I never really thought about it until I was on honeymoon in 2010. I’d tinkered with a few ideas, but then one took hold and here I am.

What were your previous jobs? Have they helped you with your writing process?

Well, I’m currently a HSE Manager. I’ve also worked in a warehouse, driving forklift trucks. I think life and work experience have helped me with writing. People from the past make great character models.

What was your inspiration for Ashes Of Innocence?

Well, this is a tough one, and quite sensitive, so I’ll tread carefully. The book is ‘very’ loosely based on a high-profile abduction and murder that took place in the UK many years ago. That’s all I’m saying.

How do you construct your characters? Do they have traits of people you know?

Yes, they do. I’ve actually written my mother-in-law into one of my books. I killed her off pretty sharpish though. If only… Many of my characters are people who have suffered great loss. I like a dark edge to them.

What does your writing process look like? Are you a plotter or a pantser?

More panster than plotter. I do have an outline of the story, with the beginning and end in my mind. But those pesky characters come along, and it all goes to hell.

How did you research Ashes Of Innocence? Did you enjoy it?

I had to look into British military ranks and procedures. Things like weaponry and places in Afghanistan where part of the book is set. I really loved delving into that world.

Who are your favourite writers? Are you influenced by them?

From the indie world, I’d say A.J. Griffiths-Jones, who is a wonderful writer who inspires me every day. From the traditional side; Stephen King, Lee Child, Wilbur Smith and many more. Such great books to draw inspiration from.

If you could invite three people, living or dead, to dinner, who would they be and why?

Hitler, because he’d be fascinating to talk to, even though he was a maniac. Clint Eastwood, because he’s a legend both on and behind the screen. Vlad the Impaler, just because he was such an interesting character, again, maniac. I may need an interpreter…

Who would play the main character/s in a film version of Ashes Of Innocence ?

Great Question. For the character of John Wilson, I’d go for Christian Bale. I think he’d be great. There’s a bit of Batman in John Wilson…

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I’m a father of two and husband. I don’t get much spare time. I’ve recently taken up kickboxing, so I guess you’ll find me punching someone. Or being punched.

What is next for you?

Well, I have two more books out in 2022. His Dark Shadow, in June and The Retreat in the autumn. I’m also writing a sequel to Ashes of Innocence, which will be out early 2023.
