Today kI’m joining the blog tour for Keep Her Sweet. My review is written with thanks to Anne Cater for inviting me on the tour and to Orenda Books for my copy of the book.
Blurb:
Desperate to enjoy their empty nest, Penny and Andeep downsize to the countryside, to forage, upcycle and fall in love again, only to be joined by their two twenty-something daughters, Asha and Camille.
Living on top of each other in a tiny house, with no way to make money, tensions simmer, and as Penny and Andeep focus increasingly on themselves, the girls become isolated, argumentative and violent.
When Asha injures Camille, a family therapist is called in, but she shrugs off the escalating violence between the sisters as a classic case of sibling rivalry … and the stress of the family move.
But this is not sibling rivalry. The sisters are in far too deep for that.
This is a murder, just waiting to happen…
Chilling, vicious and darkly funny, Keep Her Sweet is not just a tense, sinister psychological thriller, but a startling look at sister relationships and they bonds they share … or shatter.
Review:
I never thought it would be possible to find a family who would make my own family look reasonably functional but the Moloney-Singhs are that family. I love Fitzgerald’s writing with its dark humour and the way she has created the characters so that I could not help but be immersed in their lives. Each chapter is narrated from the viewpoint of a different family member and I found this really helped to understand the dynamic. We also hear regularly from their family therapist and I found that this added an interesting dimension to the novel.
As well as the family, the therapist also has her fair share of personal issues and between them, they allow Fitzgerald to explore a range of interesting themes, such as family relationships, grief, religion and drug use. It’s not an easy read at times but it is compelling and I really wanted to know how it would conclude.
I was never sure where the novel was leading and the story was full of surprises. I will remember these characters for some time to come.
Keep Her Sweet is available from Amazon.
