Q&A with Cheryl Waters

Today it’s my turn on the blog tour for It’s Time To Let Me Go. I’m sharing my Q&A with the author with thanks to Rachel Gilbey at Rachel’s Random Resources for inviting me on the tour and to Cheryl Waters for answering my questions!

Have you always wanted to write?

Yes, for many years, but I always had an excuse of being too busy. Young family, then teenagers, then work commitments.

What were your previous jobs? Have they helped you with your writing process?

I have had a varying career, with most my time spent in a sales and marketing field. I think the role that helped the most was my Sales Manager role at The Scotsman Newspaper. You needed a sharp eye for checking adverts before they were submitted for printing.

What was your inspiration for It’s Time To Let Me Go?

The inspiration for “It’s Time to Let Me Go” came from holidaying in the beautiful bay of Cavtat in Croatia. Spending time there with my parents and then a girls holiday with my daughter was the driving force behind this book.

How do you construct your characters? Do they have traits of people you know?

Ooooo! not sure I should admit to that! Yes, they do! It really helps with the writing of a character when you can picture them and their traits.

What does your writing process look like? Are you a plotter or a pantser?

I think I am more of a plotter. I get the ideas in my head and scribble them down, then work out how I can interconnect the ideas together into the story.

How did you research? Did you enjoy it?

Loved the research for this book as I used my holiday to inspire me. Walking around the old town, sitting listening to the early morning church bells, smelling the sea and the aromas from the local restaurants all helped build the picture.

Who are your favourite writers? Are you influenced by them?

I love Dee MacDonald and Veronica Henry, who are the most recent writers that I have discovered. Then the ones that have been around for many years, Maeve Binchy, Victoria Hislop & Nora Roberts.

If you could invite three people, living or dead, to dinner, who would they be and why?

My friend Jennifer who died of  Cancer 10 years ago – She would be so delighted at what I have achieved with my writing. I can hear her now say “You’re a little star”

My Mother-in-law who passed away in 2003. Now with a grown-up son of my own, i understand more how she felt when my husband married me and the children came along.

My old English Teacher from primary school who didn’t believe I had written a poem myself, which I had. I would love to show him my three books that I have now written.

Who would you least like to be stuck in a lift with, and why?

This had been the hardest question to answer!! I would just hate being stuck in a lift full stop no matter who it was with!

Who would play the main character/s in a film version of It’s Time To Let Me Go?

Audrey would be played by Kathy Bates

Olive would be played by Hayley Mills

Lucinda would be played by Renee Zellweger

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I love my garden. I found my green fingers about five years ago and have worked hard creating a garden for my French farmhouse. Reading of course but I find I can’t do that when I am in the midst of writing my own stories.

What is next for you?
