Review:
How To Kill Your Family has been recommended to me many times and I am pleased to say I have finally joined the party! I’ve read a few novels with similar protagonists recently – the female serial killer with a dry sense of humour – but I was intrigued by the premise of this story and was interested to see how it would come together.
The protagonist is Grace Bernard, and despite her obvious flaws, I actually warmed to her quite quickly. I love the way that Bella Mackie built Grace’s character. As a narrator, it goes without saying that Grace isn’t completely reliable but her personality comes through in her humour and observations. In particular, I loved her description of Kelly and her reluctant relationship with her. However, she also has a colourful past which gives her a vulnerable edge and in making sure the reader understands this, the author gives the character much more depth. It’s clear, too, that Grace’s victims aren’t the loveliest people and this also helps us to sympathise with Grace.
Throughout the story, I had very little idea where it was going, although I did enjoy the ride, building up a picture of Grace and her relatives. I was surprised by the ending but I loved how it all came together and the story will be one I remember in the coming weeks and months.
