Dawn O’Porter: Cat Lady

This review is written with thanks to Pigeonhole for the opportunity to read and review Cat Lady.

Blurb:

WHAT IF THE LIFE YOU’RE LIVING . . . ISN’T THE ONE YOU WANT?

Mia has made all the right choices. She’s married, she has the nice house, the good career. But life isn’t about fitting into a box. And there’s another woman inside her who’s just clawing to get out . . .

Review:

I read So Lucky by Dawn O’Porter a few years ago and I was keen to see what her latest offering, Cat Lady, would be like. Her writing style is graphic and blunt, so it’s not for everyone, but I loved it and I think that in the case of this novel, the direct approach helped me to understand Mia and become fully engaged in her story.

Mia is the first person narrator of Cat Lady. She’s an unusual character whose love for her cat supercedes her love for her husband and she finds it difficult to build close relationships with humans. As a result of this, it’s difficult to get to know her, but the author explores the trauma of her past and her emotions really well, so that as the novel progressed, I grew to like Mia, and feel sympathy for her, even if I didn’t always understand or agree with her actions. I wasn’t always sure where the story might go but I wanted everything to work out for her.

Although Cat Lady is reasonably easy to read, there’s a bit of everything in this story. Dawn O’Porter explores themes of grief, mental health, betrayal and abuse, to name just a few, and she does so in a way that makes the reader think but never leaves them overwhelmed.

I look forward to seeing what this author does next!

Cat Lady is available from Amazon.

  1. My friend – who is a cat lady! – is reading this just now and loving it. Despite not being a cat lady myself, somehow I’m currently looking after two different neighbours’ cats while they are away! 😸
