Today I’m joining the blog tour for The Silent House Of Sleep. My review is written with thanks to Rachel Gilbey at Rachel’s Random Resources for inviting me on the tour and to the publisher for my copy of the book.

‘No one likes death. It just happens to be our business.’
Nobody who meets Dr Jack Cuthbert forgets him. Tall, urbane, brilliant but damaged, this Scottish pathologist who works with Scotland Yard is the best the new DCI has seen. But Cuthbert is a man who lives with secrets, and he still battles demons brought back from the trenches.
When not one but two corpses are discovered in a London park in 1929, Cuthbert must use every tool at his disposal to solve the mystery of their deaths. In the end, the horrifying truth is more shocking than even he could have imagined.
As he works the case, Cuthbert realises that history rarely stays in the past. And even in the final moments, there is still one last revelation that leaves him reeling.
The Silent House of Sleep is the first book in the Dr Jack Cuthbert mystery series.
Review:
The Silent House Of Sleep is a unique novel and I really enjoyed getting stuck into it. It’s set in the late 1920s and I loved the way the author’s descriptions drew me into the world of the novel and transported me to this period of time – a time I don’t know much about – really easily. It’s unusual for the protagonist of a crime story to be a forensic pathologist, but in The Silent House Of Sleep it really works. I loved meeting Dr Cuthbert and learning more about him and how his work could contribute to solving the case. Throughout the novel, the author also takes us back to the years of World War I, and Cuthbert’s experiences here really shape him as a doctor and a person and I loved the insight this gave the reader.
The case itself is also unusual and it takes the police some time to get to grips with what is happening. I was intrigued too and it was interesting to see how investigations were handled in the 1920s. I really wanted to know how it would be resolved and it was difficult to stop reading!
I really enjoyed the author’s writing style and although the ending surprised me I loved the way it all came together.
I understand that The Silent House Of Sleep is the first book in a series featuring Jack Cuthbert and I look forward to seeing where the author takes him next.
The Silent House Of Sleep is available from Amazon.
