Ashley Elston: First Lie Wins

My review is written with thanks to Pigeonhole for the opportunity to read and review First Lie Wins.

Blurb:

Everything she is about to tell them is a lie…

Evie Porter has everything a girl could want: a doting boyfriend, a house with a picket fence, a fun group of friends.

The only catch: Evie Porter doesn’t exist.

First comes the identity. Once she’s given a name and location by her employer, she learns everything there is to know about the town and the people in it.

Then the mark: Ryan Sumner.

The last piece of the puzzle is the job. For Evie, this job feels different. Ryan has gotten under her skin and she’s started to picture another kind of life for herself – one where her boss doesn’t pull the strings.
But Evie can’t make any mistakes. Because the one thing she’s worked her entire life to keep clean, the one identity she could always go back to – her real identity – just walked right into this town. A woman, who looks just like her, has stolen her name – and she wants more. As Evie’s past begins to catch up with her, can she stay
one step ahead to save her future?

Review:

I chose to read First Lie Wins almost on a whim and I’m so glad I did. It’s exactly what I like in a book: fast paced, full of twists and I had absolutely no idea who I could trust or who was telling the truth. The protagonist is Evie Porter, and though I wouldn’t exactly say she’s likeable, I definitely admired her and her endeavours intrigued me a lot.

Ashley Elston is a really talented writer and I’m surprised I’ve not heard more of her. Her technique of using flashbacks to tell us more about what brings Evie to her situation is clever and I enjoyed trying to guess what was happening. On occasion, I found the plot a little complicated but she brings everything together perfectly and the twists are absolutely out of this world.

It’s difficult to expand further without spoilers, but I would definitely recommend reading First Lie Wins for yourself. The ending (which is also incredibly clever) leaves the story open, perhaps for a sequel, and I would definitely read that!

First Lie Wins is available from Amazon.
