Blurb:
There was someone in the house.
Home alone with her young children during a blizzard, a mother tucks her son back into bed in the middle of the night. Then she hears a noise – old houses are always making some kind of noise. But this sound is disturbingly familiar: it’s the tread of footsteps, unusually heavy and slow, coming up the stairs…
In that split second, she has three choices.
Should she hide? Should she run? Or should she fight?
Review:
Nightwatching was recommended to me by a very well respected fellow blogger and I’m so glad I’ve read it! Tracy Sierra is a debut author and I found it astonishing how accomplished her writing is. The first third of the novel is unbelievably claustrophobic and I found myself double checking everything as I went to sleep and feeling very uncomfortable.
I realised about half way through reading Nightwatching that none of the characters are specifically named. However, although you might expect that this would create distance between the characters and the reader, I actually felt sympathy for the mother. Her story raises many questions for the reader and I really wanted to find out what had happened.
As the novel gathered pace, I felt I had a handle on what was going on, but I could not have been more wrong. Tracy Sierra is brilliant at misdirection and I couldn’t turn away from the book as the plot was resolved.
Tracy Sierra is definitely an author to watch!
