When David Child, a major client of a corrupt New York law firm, is arrested for murder, the FBI ask con artist-turned-lawyer Eddie Flynn to persuade him to testify against the firm.
Eddie is not someone who is easily coerced, but when the FBI reveal that they have incriminating files on his wife, he knows he has no choice.
But Eddie is convinced the man is innocent, despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary. With the FBI putting pressure on him to secure the deal, Eddie must find a way to prove his client’s innocence.
But the stakes are high – his wife is in danger. And not just from the FBI . . .
Review:
Steve Cavanagh is absolutely brilliant at hooking the reader into his books. If you’re not enticed by the strap line, then the first few pages of The Plea should get you, and from that point onwards there’s not really any letting go. It’s fast paced, jam packed with twists and turns and full of jeopardy.
The Plea is the second outing for Eddie Flynn, a lawyer who’s not exactly known for playing by the book and this makes the actual book much more interesting. He clearly has some demons, but despite these he is determined to see his case through to the right resolution, even if it seems like a lost cause. I admire these characteristics in him and wanted him to succeed.
Steve Cavanagh has previously said in interviews that he is a pantser, so I can only assume The Plea went through many many rounds of edits because the plotting in this novel is on a completely different level. I was not always familiar with the different points of American law, but these are explained well, and I loved how Steve Cavanagh built the legal arguments so that they are completely compelling.
I look forward to reading the next book in this series very soon!
The Plea is available from Amazon.
