Today it’s my turn on the blog tour for A Second Anthology Of Poetry And Prose. My review is written with thanks to Anne Cater for inviting me on the tour and to the Newport Writers for my copy of the book.

Review:

The Newport Writers are essentially what they say on the tin – a group of writers from Newport in South Wales. Before each piece, there is a short biography for the writer and it’s clear from these that some have experience of being published and some do not, but you really wouldn’t know the difference – they’re all so talented. They all have different styles and they write in a variety of genres: in this collection alone there is poetry, fantasy, scifi, comedy and crime. There is definitely something for everyone to enjoy and I enjoyed reading works that I may not have otherwise read alongside pieces that were further inside my comfort zone.

Not all the pieces make reference to the hometown of most of the writers, but those that do, do so with a pride and affection that really shines through. The poem at the beginning of the anthology was a perfect way to start the collection.

The pieces in the anthology cover a wide range of subjects and I was really interested in the way in which the writers chose to approach these issues. Some of the pieces were inspired by “prompt words” and I was fascinated to see what was created from them.

I am now keen to go back and read the first anthology by the Newport Writers. I hope that those writers who wish to pursue publication are successful in doing so as they really deserve it.
