Joy Wood: Whatever It Takes

Today I’m joining the blog tour for Whatever It Takes. My review is written with thanks to Rachel Gilbey at Rachel’s Random Resources for inviting me on the tour and to Boldwood Books for my copy of the book.

Blurb:

WHATEVER IT TAKES

THE WIFE: Lorna lives with her husband in her dream home, loves socialising and has a passion for the finer things in life.

THE HUSBAND: Dan owns a successful accountancy business, enjoys golf and exercise, and loves Lorna deeply.
Life is good. Until new neighbours move in to the house next door.

Perry, a property developer is charismatic and friendly, with a beautiful young wife, Ingrid. They become friends, sharing intimate dinners, trips away and ultimately a holiday together in Greece. But all is not as friendly as it seems.

While there, a fatal accident occurs that changes their lives.

They don’t all return. But those that do, are hiding a huge secret . . . and there’s someone who will do whatever it takes to make sure that it never comes to the surface.

Review:

When I signed up for this blog tour, it was the blurb of Whatever It Takes that intrigued me. Joy Wood does a good job of maintaining this interest and I enjoyed the way she slipped little clues in the narrative to keep me guessing and wondering what was going on. The author’s writing is very clever and there are elements of the story that do not seem significant but turn out to be pivotal much later, and I really admire this ability in an author.

Whatever It Takes focuses on two couples: Dan and Lorna and Perry and Ingrid. I must admit that I found it really difficult to warm to these characters, but I’m not sure that the author intended them to be universally likeable. The chapters are written from the different points of view of the four characters and this helps the reader to work out what their motives might be.

At first, I found the novel to be quite slow burning, but in the second half it really bursts into life. There are a number of twists and turns as the story reaches its conclusion and although I did guess some of them.i still found Whatever It Takes enjoyable.

Whatever It Takes is available from Amazon.
