Today I’m joining the blog tour for The Guests. My review is written with thanks to Zoe O’Farrell for inviting me on the tour and to the publisher for my copy of the book.
Blurb:
Six guests are invited to paradise. Some of them will die.
Ryleigh is a struggling artist, still trying to catch her break. Her new best friend, Kerrigan, offers her a once in a lifetime opportunity — a week on her family’s private island on Lake Michigan.
She doesn’t belong here. She doesn’t know these people at all.
Kerrigan is the housewife with the perfect life. She has a loving husband and a glamorous city apartment.
Her husband hates her. Their marriage is a sham.
Cole is a local. He’s there to make sure the guests have everything they want.
After last summer, this is his final chance. He can’t afford any distractions.
Each guest has their own villa. There are staff on-call twenty-four hours a day — a masseuse, chefs to make dinner every night, waiters pouring endless champagne. It’s going to be perfect.
But a violent storm looms on the horizon. There’s no way off the island.
Then one of the guests disappears. And they won’t be the last . . .
The unmissable new psychological thriller from USA TODAY bestselling author Adriane Leigh that fans of Lucy Foley, Sarah Goodwin, Lucy Clarke and The White Lotus will love.
Review:
The prologue of The Guests is probably the shortest prologue I’ve ever read, but it sets the tone for the novel wonderfully, and it’s one I kept thinking back to as the story unfolded. From the beginning, I was hooked: there are secrets, lies, red herrings and fractured relationships which create the formula for a fabulous psychological thriller.
The Guests is written from the perspectives of multiple narrators: almost every character has their own chapter at some point in the novel. I enjoyed seeing the events of the novel from different viewpoints and it was a really effective way of showing the reader what each character knew and what they were hiding from each other. I must admit that with so many characters, it did take me some time to get to grips with who was who, but this became clearer as I got further into the story.
Adriane Leigh has a writing style that is fast paced and easy to read, and it kept me engaged the whole way through. The plot line is intriguing and I loved the way the author placed clues for the reader that at first seemed innocuous, but were actually a significant part of the story. Towards the end of the novel, there were plenty of twists, and although I guessed some of these, there were lots of surprises.
The Guests is available from Amazon.
