Today I’m back on the blogathon for the Jack Warr series by Lynda La Plante. My review of Pure Evil, the fourth book in the series, is written with thanks to Tracy Fenton for inviting me on the blogathon and to the publisher for my copy of the book.
Blurb:
It was supposed to be a simple case: a young man arrested for armed assault.
But it was just the beginning.
As Rodney Middleton awaits trial, Detective Jack Warr is warned by his mentor DCI Ridley that they have only scratched the surface of the man’s crimes.
Then DCI Ridley is suddenly removed from his post. No one is to contact him – and no one will say why.
As Warr digs into Middleton’s past, Ridley calls pleading for help, now accused of a murder he insists he didn’t commit.
To catch a monster and exonerate his friend, Warr must weed out the lies. But what awaits Warr if he uncovers the truth?
Review:
I’ve absolutely loved this series and Pure Evil was no different. Lynda La Plante is known as the Queen of Crime and she totally deserves this title. Her writing is immaculately researched, yet this does not slow the pace at all and her stories are full of tension and intrigue.
DS Jack Warr is a brilliant character and I’ve loved reading as he has developed over four novels now. His determination is something else, and I love the way he thinks outside the box and follows his instincts, even if it irritates his colleagues! We have also got to know his colleagues, particularly Laura and Anik, much better over the series. They now work much more closely as a team, and their different skills are coming to the fore.
I also love how Lynda La Plante includes Jack’s personal life in the series, and I have warmed to his family just as much, if not more, than Jack himself.
Throughout the series, Jack has had a strong relationship with his boss, DCI Ridley; however, in Pure Evil, he is absent from the workplace, and I was intrigued to find out why. I was also interested to discover how Jack would work without him and respond to a new boss, and I really enjoyed reading as he established a relationship with DCI Clarke.
The plot of Pure Evil is complex and has many different elements to it. I enjoyed following the different investigations and trying to work out the solutions. There was lots of tension and I was completely engaged in the story from beginning to end.
The ending sets the next book in the series up really well and I can’t wait to read it!
Pure Evil is available from Amazon.
