Today I’m joining the blog tour for Room 21. My review is written with thanks to Zoe O’Farrell for inviting me on the tour and to the publisher for my copy of the book.
Blurb:
A BRAND-NEW darkly addictive psychological thriller with the most shocking twists you’ll read this year, from a bestselling author.
They say blood is thicker than water. I say blood is just harder to wash off your hands.
My name’s Kimberley. I’m twenty-five. I have epilepsy, a seizure alert dog named Muffin, and a job I love as a senior housekeeper in one of London’s top hotels. I’m used to being invisible. Overlooked. Safe.
But that was before Jennifer Clifton checked in. She’s rich, powerful, terrifyingly calm — and she asks for me by name.
She offers me my dream job, working in her exclusive hotel in the Scottish Highlands. It’s more money than I ever imagined.
There’s just one catch: Don’t open the door to Room 21.
Review:
I discovered Jessica Huntley earlier this year and it’s safe to say she has a new fan! Room 21 is just as amazing as I expected. It’s fast paced and full of tension and twists and turns, so it absolutely ticks all my reading boxes.
The prologue of Room 21 really piqued my interest and I really wanted to know how everything would play out. I couldn’t wait to get to know Kimberley and find out more about both her past and her life at the Clifton Hotel. The narration of the novel is shared by Kimberley, Jennifer and Emily and I loved the insight this afforded us into their lives. I warmed quite easily to Kimberley and Emily, but Jennifer did seem slightly more aloof. However, as her past unravelled it became easier to understand why she acted in the way she did. I can’t write about characters without mentioning Muffin, Kimberley’s epilepsy assistance dog, who is wonderful at feeling the vibes around the Clifton Hotel, and I love how protective he is towards Kimberley.
Jessica Huntley has researched epilepsy really thoroughly, which makes this element of the plot brilliantly realistic and adds to the tension.
The Clifton Hotel is not a place where I’d like to visit or work, and Jessica Huntley has created such a creepy atmosphere around the setting which made me feel quite claustrophobic and uncomfortable as I was reading, which kept me on my toes all the way through.
It’s difficult to write any further about the plot without giving away spoilers, but I loved every single twist and the ending in particular really made my jaw drop.
I can’t wait to read more from Jessica Huntley!
