Today I’m joining the blog tour for The Baby Group. My review is written with thanks to Zoe O’Farrell for inviting me on the tour and to the publisher for my copy of the book.
Blurb:
My fiancé, Alex, is slumped beside the birthing pool, his head gashed open. The baby? Gone.
I cradle my empty stomach, my empty arms. And then Alex looks at me — not with love, but with blame.
This wasn’t how it was supposed to go. The move. The fresh start. The antenatal classes. The new friends. But nothing about this feels right.
And as the sirens wail closer, I realize something terrible — someone planned this. Someone in our new life wanted our baby.
And I think they’re in the baby group.
A totally addictive and twist-filled psychological thriller perfect for fans of Freida McFadden, Daniel Hurst, Lucinda Berry, Kiersten Modglin and Tarryn Fisher.
Review:
The Baby Group starts with a bang right from the prologue, and although the events that come afterwards don’t have an obvious connection, it’s clear that there is one, and this was in the back of my mind creating intrigue as I read the rest of the novel.
The protagonist is Darcy, and we hear the vast majority of the story from her point of view. She’s likeable, but very naive, and I did find myself wanting to give her a good talking to at times! It’s clear that she has some mental health issues and I wasn’t sure if this would impact her reliability as a narrator, which made me question everything I was reading! She’s surrounded by characters who wave a truck load of red flags between them and I really wanted to find out more about these characters and discover the truth about their lives.
As the story is centred around an antenatal class, the pool of suspects is quite small and they all have reasons to behave suspiciously. This creates a lot of tension in the novel, which kept me engaged throughout the story. There are few twists along the way, and I did guess a few of them, but this did not spoil my enjoyment of the novel.
The Baby Group ends on a slight cliffhanger, and there would definitely be scope for an interesting sequel if the author wanted to revisit these characters.
The Baby Group is available from Amazon.
