Today I’m joining the blog tour for The Judge’s Lawyer. My review is written with thanks to Zoe O’Farrell for inviting me on the tour and to the publisher for my copy of the book.
Blurb:
He freed a monster. Now the city wants his head.
Mitchum Sweeney is fifty, separated from his wife, and one bad hand away from financial ruin.
By day, he’s a judicial staff attorney at Oakland’s Superior Court. By night, he’s dodging creditors and chasing lost causes. But when his expert testimony sets cartel kingpin Paco Castillo free, Mitch becomes a target — for the union, the FBI, and Paco himself.
Castillo has one final demand: find his missing wife, and Mitch’s mountain of gambling debt disappears.
But when Mitch’s search uncovers evidence of a child trafficking ring buried in the justice system itself, the stakes turn lethal.
As bullets fly and bodies drop, Mitch is forced to reckon with his past and confront impossible choices — because the truth won’t set him free, and saving the people he loves might mean damning himself for good . . .
A razor-sharp legal thriller packed with corruption, blackmail, and moral reckoning. Perfect for fans of John Grisham, Michael Connelly, Scott Turow, James Patterson and Harlan Coben.
Review:
Dylan H Jones is a really talented writer and this is showcased brilliantly in The Judge’s Lawyer. I loved his descriptions, particularly of the locations to which Mitch travels, and I could picture really vividly what was happening.
I must admit that it did take me some time to become fully engaged in this novel, but once I did, the tension was high and I really wanted to know what would happen next. The plot is very high stakes and there is always a sense of danger, and I wanted to see how Mitch would resolve the various difficult situations in which he found himself. There are some scenes depicting quite gruesome violence, but I appreciated this aspect of it, as I felt it raised the jeopardy in the story.
As a central character, I did like Mitch, even though some of his decisions were questionable. It’s clear from the beginning that he has his fair share of personal issues, and in this respect, he’s a familiar character in the crime novel, but I did root for him and I could see how much he cared for his family and I wanted him to work things out with them.
I’m looking forward to seeing what this author does next!
