Blurb:
A woman and child are found locked in a basement room, barely alive.
No one knows who they are – the woman can’t speak, and there are no missing persons reports that match their profile. The elderly man who owns the house claims he has never seen them before.
The inhabitants of the quiet Oxford street are in shock. How could this happen right under their noses? But DI Adam Fawley knows that nothing is impossible.
And that no one is as innocent as they seem . . .
The second twisty, up-all-night thriller from the Sunday Times bestselling Cara Hunter. For fans of Shari Lapena, Claire Douglas and Lisa Jewell.
Review:
It’s a ridiculously long time since I read Close To Home and I’m quite embarrassed that it’s taken me so long to get back with this series, but what a treat it was. Cara Hunter is a fantastic writer, and I love the innovative way this story (and the whole series) is told in large parts through news articles, police interviews and social media posts. This gives a feel for the frenzy around the investigation, which drew me into it really quickly as I had to know what was happening!
The lead detective of the series is Adam Fawley, and the prose is written from his viewpoint. We are invited into his life, and it is easy to see that he is quite an emotional character who has suffered through some horrendous life events. I enjoyed getting to know him better, and I’m looking forward to seeing his character develop over the series. Fawley’s team are also a group of wonderfully created characters, and although they each have very different personalities, I like the way they come together as a team. I loved the involvement of PC Erica Somer and I do hope we see more of her.
In The Dark focuses on two investigations which run alongside each other. Cara Hunter has plotted the storylines and weaved them together immaculately in a way that kept me hooked and always wanting more as the story unravelled.
I promise I will not leave it as long before I read the next one!
