Jack Jordan: My Girl

Today it’s my second stop on the Jack Jordan blogathon and I’m sharing my review of My Girl. It’s written with thanks to Tracy Fenton for inviting me on the blogathon and to the publisher for my copy of the book.

Blurb:

Paige Dawson: the mother of a murdered child and wife to a dead man.

She has nothing left to live for… until she finds her husband’s handgun hidden in their house.

Why did Ryan need a gun? What did he know about their daughter’s death?

Desperate for the truth, Paige begins to unearth her husband’s secrets.

But she has no idea who she is up against, or that her life isn’t hers to gamble – she belongs to me.

Review:

I’m really enjoying this blogathon and I’m loving the opportunity to read some of Jack Jordan’s earlier work. The earlier work is different in terms of style, but Jack Jordan’s creativity and talent shines through. My Girl is a very short novel, but it definitely packs a punch and I could feel the raw emotion radiating from the page.

My Girl begins with the heartbreaking story of Paige and I became really immersed in this very quickly. It’s clear that Paige’s recollection and judgement may not be completely reliable, and this added to the intrigue of the story. However, despite this, and Paige’s erratic behaviour, I did feel sympathy for her and I wanted her to get the answers she needed. It’s not just Paige whose character is well constructed – in particular, the villain in this novel is one of the most repulsive, creepiest characters I’ve ever read, and it is credit to Jack Jordan’s writing that he was able to make me feel like this.

It’s difficult to write much more about My Girl without giving away spoilers, but I 100% DID NOT see where this story was going. I loved being blindsided like this, and it made the second half of the novel an incredibly gripping and visceral reading experience.

My Girl is available from Amazon.
