Review:

Jane Badrock: The Ice Maiden 

The Ice Maiden is written in first person from Maddie’s perspective with several instances of internal monologue as Maddie comes to terms with the loss of her mother and discover who is trying to hurt her and why. There are also diary entries at the beginning of each chapter which give the reader clues as to the secrets Maddie’s mother had taken to her grave. The different forms did mean that it took me a while to fully get into the flow of this novel, but it does make the writing style very distinctive. It also helped me to understand Maddie’s character better, and despite the obvious differences in our ages and life experience, there was plenty for me to relate to. 

From the outset, there are several questions that Badrock poses for the reader and this made the story very intriguing. I wanted to know the answers and it is this that kept me reading until the very end. There were lots of strands to the novel and I did wonder how they would all tie together, but I should have been less impatient – Badrock does this brilliantly! 

There are some interesting themes and concepts in The Ice Maiden which Badrock has researched thoroughly. There were some unexpected moments towards the end which helped to keep me entertained.
