Today I’m taking part in the blog tour for Broken. My review is written with thanks to Zoe O’Farrell for inviting me on the tour and to the team at SpellBound Books for my copy of the book.

Review:

Although Broken is relatively short, it certainly packs a punch. It begins with Camilla, who is in court to see her son be sentenced and the intrigue continues from there. The novel never followed the direction I expected it to, but I was always engaged and I really wanted to know what would happen next. Legat’s storytelling is fabulous and I enjoyed being caught up in the narrative. 

Broken is written mostly from two different perspectives: Camilla and Joseph. They are very different characters and I really wanted to see how their lives would collide and what would happen when they did. Legat has created these characters – and the characters who surround them – really well and I love the detail she has put into them. They are not always likeable but they definitely kept me on my toes. 

The novel is set during the first lockdown in 2020. It is still quite unusual for authors to integrate the pandemic into their work but Legat does it well. I definitely have a sense of how difficult it was for people, particularly those from less affluent backgrounds and in difficult situations, but this does not lessen the impact of the story in any way. 

I have not read anything by this author before but this will change after reading Broken.
