2020 was a year like no other and difficult for all. Joanna Philpot is a mother of three who speaks from honest, first-hand experiences to reflect on navigating pregnancy, and the new-born days, throughout a global pandemic. She covers everything from that first positive test; the announcement of the Covid-19 pandemic; lone antenatal appointments; online support; to those first steps we took out of lockdown to return to ‘normal’. As well as reflecting on the difficulties she and other parents and families faced, she remembers with joy the positives being locked down brought. Joanna sheds light on the unnerving scenario that millions of women faced at this time and provides an in-depth account of being pregnant in a pandemic.
Review:
The year 2020 was a year like no other for all of us for many reasons, but what was it like for people and families going through pregnancy? Pregnant In A Pandemic is a really informative but emotional account of how the Pandemic affected one mother of a newborn baby. I’ve never been pregnant so Joanna Philpot describes some issues and appointments that I hadn’t even realised were necessary and I was touched by how difficult some things were for her. The author writes from the heart and the emotion really comes through the pages and I wanted to jump inside and hug her.
Whilst the author describes the difficulties of her own experiences, she is incredibly compassionate towards others and throughout the book, she reiterates how her personal situation is different to that of many others; for example, she does have a supportive partner and family and both she and her partner were able to continue to work during the pandemic. Her consideration of other people who didn’t have this highlights the difficulties that other mothers may have had during their pregnancy.
There are also a few cute baby pictures in the centre pages and I can’t wait to get my hands on a print copy to see these in more detail.
Pregnant In A Pandemic is a short book that’s really easy to read but it will stay with me for a long time.
