Blurb:
Newlyweds Tricia and Ethan are searching for the house of their dreams.
But when they visit the remote manor that once belonged to Dr. Adrienne Hale, a renowned psychiatrist who vanished without a trace four years earlier, a violent winter storm traps them at the estate… with no chance of escape until the blizzard comes to an end.
In search of a book to keep her entertained until the snow abates, Tricia happens upon a secret room. One that contains audio transcripts from every single patient Dr. Hale has ever interviewed. As Tricia listens to the cassette tapes, she learns about the terrifying chain of events leading up to Dr. Hale’s mysterious disappearance.
Tricia plays the tapes one by one, late into the night. With each one, another shocking piece of the puzzle falls into place, and Dr. Adrienne Hale’s web of lies slowly unravels.
And then Tricia reaches the final cassette.
The one that reveals the entire horrifying truth.
Review:
Having read and loved both The Housemaid and The Housemaid’s Secret, I was really excited to delve into Freida McFadden’s back catalogue. Never Lie is another book that ticks all my boxes: fast paced writing, unreliable characters, lots of twists and a healthy helping of violence. I read the whole novel in less than 24 hours!
The narrators in Never Lie are Tricia and Adrienne. Adrienne is a psychiatrist, and it’s fascinating to receive some insight into her work, including some transcripts of sessions with her patients. She’s recently disappeared, but no one has been held responsible for her disappearance. Tricia and Ethan are a recently married couple who arrive at Adrienne’s house, hoping to look around with a view to buying it. For me, their relationship was definitely filled with red flags and I found both characters quite unlikeable. There is a very tense atmosphere throughout the novel and it was very difficult to know who to trust.
Never Lie has plenty of twists, and whilst I didn’t guess all of them, they weren’t quite as jaw dropping as I’ve come to expect from this author. However, Freida McFadden’s plotting is second to none and I love the way all the little details sprinkled throughout the novel come into their own towards the end, so you have to pay attention!
I can’t wait to read more from this author!
Never Lie is available from Amazon.
