Jack Jordan: Conviction

Today I’m taking part in the blog tour for Conviction. My review is written with thanks to Anne Cater for inviting me on the tour and to the publisher for my copy of the book.

Blurb:

TO STEAL A MAN’S FREEDOM ALL IT TAKES IS . . . CONVICTION

Wade Darling stands accused of killing his wife and teenage children as they slept before burning the family home to the ground.

When the case lands on barrister Neve Harper’s desk, she knows it could be the career making case she’s been waiting for. But only if she can prove Wade’s innocence.

A matter of days before the case, as Neve is travelling home for the night, she is approached by a man. He tells her she must lose this case or the secret about her own husband’s disappearance will be revealed.

Failing that, he will kill everyone she cares about until she follows orders.

Neve must make a choice – betray every principle she has ever had by putting a potentially innocent man in prison, or risk putting those she loves in mortal danger.

For fans of Steve Cavanagh, Linwood Barclay and Gillian McAllister, introducing the latest novel from the master of the moral dilemma, Jack Jordan.

Review:

I’m a big fan of Jack Jordan’s work so you can imagine how excited I was to get my hands on Conviction, which I think might be my favourite novel of his so far!

From the beginning, Neve’s case looks like an absolutely fascinating one and I was already fully invested in the novel, trying to figure out if Wade Darling, Neve’s client, was innocent, before the twist came. I hadn’t read the blurb before I started reading, so this felt like a huge curveball to me and I loved the extra dimension it gave to the case. Conviction is fast paced, full of drama and I found it really difficult to stop reading, even to eat or sleep!

The protagonist of Conviction is Neve. She’s a very intelligent, successful barrister but she has a secret of her own that she is trying to keep hidden. In between the court scenes, we get a glimpse into her personal life: her missing husband, overbearing mother in law and stepdaughter full of teenage angst. This really helped me to gain a full picture of Neve’s life and become immersed in her story. I often wanted to shake her for the decisions she made, but I did want her to succeed and come through the other side of what felt like an impossible situation.

There were some elements of the ending that I guessed, but I was still engaged the whole way through and thoroughly enjoyed every minute. I love a book with an open ending and that’s what we have here, and it ensures that I’m still thinking about these characters days after I finished reading.

Conviction is available from Amazon.
