LJ Ross: Sycamore Gap

Blurb:

THE EXPLOSIVE SEQUEL TO THE UK #1 BESTSELLER HOLY ISLAND

The past never stays buried for long…

Detective Chief Inspector Ryan believes he has put his turbulent history behind him. Then, in the early hours of the summer solstice, the skeleton of a young woman is found inside the Roman Wall at Sycamore Gap. She has lain undiscovered for ten years and it is Ryan’s job to piece together her past.

Enquiry lines cross and merge as Ryan is forced to face his own demons and enter into a deadly game of cat and mouse with a killer who seems unstoppable.

Murder and mystery are peppered with a sprinkling of romance and humour in this fast-paced crime whodunnit set amidst the spectacular scenery of Hadrian’s Wall country in Northumberland.

Review:

I read Holy Island a few years ago and I wish I could tell you why it’s taken me so long to continue the series. LJ Ross is a wonderful writer and I loved her description of Sycamore Gap and the surrounding areas which took me straight to the North East and into the heart of the action.

DCI Ryan is a brilliant character and I loved being back with him. He is determined and intelligent, which made me really keen to see this case through to the end. His relationship with DS Phillips is full of banter, but also respect and I really enjoyed their scenes together. Ryan’s back story is also developed in Sycamore Gap and it is fascinating, highlighting his vulnerability and allowing the author to let us see his more human side. His relationship with Anna enhances this too – and it’s lovely to read about a detective who seems to have a successful relationship!

LJ Ross is absolutely brilliant at placing red herrings throughout the novel and there are so many suspects. I loved trying to guess how each character was connected to each other and I was hooked from the very first page. As the investigation began to heat up, the tension rose and the author’s writing is incredibly gripping.

I will definitely not wait so long to read the next instalment and I can’t wait to get stuck in!

Sycamore Gap is available from Amazon.
