Today I’m joining the blog tour for A Random Kill. My review is written with thanks to Zoe O’Farrell for inviting me on the tour and to the author for my copy of the book.
Blurb:
Book One in the DS Regan Carter series.
DS Regan Carter never imagined she would end up in the Major Crime Unit, surrounded by the one thing she despises most: death. But when a young mother is brutally killed and her baby kidnapped, Regan is thrown into a terrifying battle with a local organized crime group. As she closes in on the gang-members, she must also face the horror of her own past. Regan struggles to keep her head above water.
But this is just the beginning. As the OCG begins to crumble and secrets are revealed, Regan finds herself facing a threat that hits dangerously close to home. With her job, her reputation, and her life on the line, she must use all her skills and ferocity to take down the criminals before they take her down first.
For fans of gripping police procedurals, and crime thrillers with strong female leads, A Random Kill is a must-read. Don’t miss out on this heart-pounding debut in the DS Regan Carter series.

Review:
A Random Kill is the first book I have read by Andrew Barrett but it definitely won’t be my last! It’s the first in a new series by the author, so you don’t need to read the others before you read this one. Eddie Collins, the protagonist of the author’s other work, does pop up occasionally and I loved this touch.
The protagonist of A Random Kill is Regan Carter, and I love her. I’ve read stories about maverick detectives, but Regan is the most maverick of them all. She’s determined to catch the bad guys and she’ll do whatever it takes to do so, even if it means putting herself in harms way. She doesn’t make friends very easily and she’s not very popular, so the team don’t gel very well in the way I’ve seen in other novels in the genre. However, the individual characters are all very interesting and I look forward to seeing how they get on as the series continues.
As a Leeds resident, I appreciated the references to the local area, and recognised most of them. Andrew Barrett uses them very effectively to allow the reader to visualise the location and what is happening.
The plot of A Random Kill is action packed and this made it very difficult to put the novel down. It’s a wonderfully written cat and mouse chase that kept me both entertained and on my toes the whole way through. There’s a definite sense of danger and it was really thrilling to follow, especially towards the end. I also loved the way the ending played out.
I can’t wait to continue reading about this team!
