Today I’m taking part in the blog tour for The Revenge Pact. My review is written with thanks to Rachel Gilbey at Rachel’s Random Resources for inviting me on the tour and to the author for my copy of the book.
Blurb:
TWO DEATHS
Tommy and Markie Jones are discovered dead at the side of a road in Scotland.
TWO RIVAL GANGS
Detectives Jazzy Solanki and Annie McQueen are on the scene where the bodies are identified as the nephews of Loanie Gibbs, head of a notable Edinburgh gang.
The turf war between the gangs of Glasgow and Edinburgh has existed for years, but these murders signal an escalation in violence.
ONE UNFORGIVABLE BETRAYAL
As the investigation unfolds, there’s suspicion about a leak within the police force, and to her dismay Jazzy is asked to keep a watchful eye on someone close to her. With distrust on all sides, can the pair uncover the truth before the body count mounts even more?
Review:
I am so pleased that the Jazz Queens are back! I absolutely loved The Blood Promise and I am glad that Liz Mistry has taken the opportunity to develop the characters even further in what is a really gripping and exciting story. I would recommend that you read The Blood Promise first, as although the author does a great job of filling in the gaps, you really need to meet these characters and understand their background stories from the beginning. DS Jasmine Solanki and DC Annie McQueen really shouldn’t work as a partnership but they absolutely do. I love the way they bounce off each other and share moments of humour, which offer a change of tone beside the darker murder scenes in which they are involved. They are both still working to repair their reputation in the eyes of their (appropriately named) boss, DCI Dick and I love their determination to show him what they are capable of.
I also love the characters of Heggie and McBurnie, who are also part of their team and have wonderful back stories of their own, which Liz Mistry explores so well.
Most of the novel is written in third person, but there are occasional chapters in first person from the viewpoint of the killer, known only as Vengeance. I found this so intriguing, as I was desperate to know who they were and why they had targeted their victims. Liz Mistry is brilliant at developing this character over fairly short chapters and I loved learning more about them, particularly as the story gathered pace.
There is a lot going on in The Revenge Pact and the plotting is flawless. It’s particularly dark and there are a few shocking scenes but I was drawn in from the beginning and loved all the different directions the author took me in as she introduced a new strand of the story. I was really keen to know how everything would come together and I loved the twists and turns. I didn’t guess a single one!
The Revenge Pact ends in a way that leaves me wanting so much more from the Jazz Queens and I can’t wait for the next book in the series!
