HM Lynn: The Student

Today I’m joining the blog tour for The Student. My review is written with thanks to Rachel Gilbey at Rachel’s Random Resources for inviting me on the tour and to the publisher for my copy of the book.

Blurb:

I’ve spent years running from my past.

After what happened to my parents, I needed to start fresh, far away from the whispers and stares. Now, as a struggling university student, I barely scrape by, living in a new town where no one knows me or the tragedy I’ve tried to forget.

To make ends meet, I take on a ghostwriting job for a high-profile client. But as I work with this mysterious person more, their ideas hit too close to home. It’s as if they know everything about me, even the darkest parts of my past.

When my oldest friend goes missing, I realise I can’t trust this client. But I can’t escape their hold on me.

Because they know how this story ends. I survived once, but can I survive this?

A dark and compulsive psychological thriller that will have you holding your breath.

Review:

HM Lynn has a few pen names and writes in a few different genres, but it’s clear she’s a talented writer and this psychological thriller is testament to that. I read the whole of The Student in one day and I couldn’t wait to find out the answers to the questions that HM Lynn poses throughout this story.

The narrator of The Student is Frankie. It is clear from the outset that her life has been shaped by trauma and l wanted to know more about that and how it influences her behaviour in the present day. It also meant that I was never completely sure that she was a reliable narrator, and I was never sure whether I could trust her, or whether the dishonesty lay with one of the other characters. Each character is really well developed and I really enjoyed trying to guess where everyone fit in. I loved how the author made me think twice about this; it kept me hooked from beginning to end.

The Student is easy to read, but it only fully comes to life around half way through, as the author lays a lot of groundwork for us to try and figure out what is happening. However, once it bursts into life, it does not let go and there are several twists which left me reeling. I had no idea where the story was going and I absolutely did not guess the ending!

The Student is available from Amazon.
