Today I’m joining another Lynda La Plante blogathon and I’m delighted! This time I will be reviewing the Jack Warr series, in time for the release of the next book in the series in April. My review is written with thanks to Tracy Fenton for inviting me on the blogathon and to the publisher for my copy of the book.
Blurb:
DC Jack Warr and his girlfriend Maggie have just moved to London to start a new life together. Though charming, Jack can’t seem to find his place in the world – until he’s drawn into an investigation that turns his life upside down.
In the aftermath of a fire at an isolated cottage, a badly charred body is discovered, along with the burnt remains of millions of stolen, untraceable bank notes.
Jack’s search leads him deep into a murky criminal underworld – a world he finds himself surprisingly good at navigating. But as the line of the law becomes blurred, how far will Jack go to find the answers – and what will it cost him?
In BURIED, it’s time to meet DC Jack Warr as he digs up the deadly secrets of the past . . .
Review:
I’m very excited to be back with Lynda La Plante and starting a new series! The protagonist of this series is DC Jack Warr. He’s very different to most fictional detectives: he’s not particularly ambitious and he seems to be in a reasonably functional relationship, but he does have his demons and I loved finding out about his history alongside the investigation. There is an interesting dynamic in his team and I’m looking forward to exploring this more as the series progresses.
The plot of Buried is quite complex, but as usual, Lynda La Plante handles it with aplomb. There are a lot of characters involved in the investigation, some of whom I’ve since found out were part of one of the author’s previous series, but although it took me a while to get my head around who was who, the fact that this was my first meeting with the characters didn’t hinder my understanding or enjoyment of the novel. I can see why Lynda La Plante decided to bring them back – they’re intelligent, feisty and determined women who definitely add some vibrancy to the novel.
Buried is not a particularly short book, but it’s very fast pace and it’s absolutely full of tension. I loved all the twists and turns and I really wanted to discover all the answers.
I’m really looking forward to reading the rest of the series!
Buried is available from Amazon.
