Chris Carter: One By One

Today I’m back on the Chris Carter blogathon with my review of One By One. It’s written with thanks to Tracy Fenton for inviting me on the blogathon.

Blurb:

Detective Robert Hunter of the LAPD’s Homicide Special Section receives an anonymous call asking him to go to a specific web address – a private broadcast. Hunter logs on and a horrific show devised for his eyes only immediately begins.

The LAPD, together with the FBI, use everything at their disposal to electronically trace the transmission down, but this killer is no amateur, and he has covered his tracks from start to finish. And before Hunter and his partner Garcia are even able to get their investigation going, Hunter receives a new phone call. A new website address. A new victim. But this time the killer has upgraded his game so that anyone can take part . . .

Review:

I’m quickly becoming one of Chris Carter’s biggest fans as a result of the blogathon, and One By One is a fantastic addition to the series that has done nothing to change that. Chris Carter is such a creative writer, and I love how inventive the storyline is, particularly given how popular the reality television format is in popular culture. It ticks all my boxes: it’s dark, fast paced and incredibly suspenseful.

The central detectives in the series are Robert Hunter and Carlos Garcia. I’ve written before about how much I enjoy spending time with these characters and One By One was no different. Their partnership works really well and I love the way they bounce off each other, both in terms of solving the crimes with which they are faced and their personalities and humour. In this investigation, they are joined by Michelle Kelly, who works for the FBI hacking electronic devices. She’s a fascinating character and I love the dynamic she brings to the team.

One By One is brilliantly plotted and the details are immaculate. I love how the small details which seem inconsequential earlier in the novel form an integral part of the plot. It does take some time for the detectives to find some promising leads, but the tension still builds in the background and I found it very difficult to stop reading! As always, it’s not for the faint hearted (but I love this) and the denouement is full of jeopardy and danger that left me holding my breath!

I can’t wait to read the next instalment in the series!

One By One is available from Amazon.
