Lisa Hall: The Dream Family

Today I’m joining the blog tour for The Dream Family. My review is written with thanks to Zoe O’Farrell for inviting me on the blog tour and to the publisher for my copy of the book.

Blurb:

We’re the dream family. Just ask my hundred thousand followers.

A dream cottage in the town I grew up in. A fresh start for ten-year-old Cora. The mums at the school gate welcome me straight away. Coffee after drop-off. Drinks at the pub.

Then a message appears from a number I don’t know.

B*TCH.

Just wait until your new friends find out what you’re really like.

Someone gets into my house. Someone posts things only I should have seen. Someone is tearing my perfect family apart, one post at a time.

I’ve never told anyone what I did here, all those years ago.

Now my little girl is gone. And the latest message asks:

How does it feel to lose the one you love the most?

AN EXHILARATING BLEND OF PSYCHOLOGICAL SUSPENSE, NAIL-BITING TENSION WITH A SHATTERING FINAL TWIST.

Perfect for fans of Freida McFadden, Daniel Hurst, T.M. Logan, Lisa Jewell, Claire Douglas, and Shari Lapena.

Review:

I’ve loved everything I’ve read by Lisa Hall up to now and The Dream Family is definitely an accomplished domestic psychological thriller. It’s easy to read and very fast paced, and although the tension takes some time to build, I loved the sense of unease that permeates through the writing all the way through the novel.

The Dream Family is slightly slow burning, but this allows Lisa Hall to focus on the characters and allow us to get to know them. The majority of the novel is narrated by Heather, and although I often felt sympathy for her, there were moments where I wasn’t sure if her account of what had happened were reliable. She’s surrounded by an interesting group of fellow parents who all have different personalities and I loved seeing how all the characters developed and how the dynamic of the group changed as the plot gathered place.

The tension comes to a head quite late in the novel and I enjoyed reading as it all unfolded. I did guess who the perpetrator was but there is a well developed back story to explain their reasons, which added to the intrigue. However, I did not expect the ending and I am now left wondering what became of this lovely group of parents and their children!

The Dream Family is available from Amazon.
