HA Leuschel: The Memories We Bury

Today I’m pleased to be taking part in the blog tour for The Memories We Bury. My review is written with thanks to Zoe O’Farrell for inviting me on the tour and to the publisher for my copy of the book.

Blurb:

Lizzie Thomson has landed her first job as a music teacher, and after a whirlwind romance with Markus, the newlywed couple move into a beautiful new home in the outskirts of Edinburgh. Lizzie quickly befriends their neighbour Morag, an elderly, resourceful yet lonely widow, whose own children rarely visit her. Everything seems perfect in Lizzie’s life until she finds out she is pregnant and her relationship with both Morag and Markus change beyond her control.

Can Lizzie really trust Morag and why is Markus keeping secrets from her?

In The Memories We Bury the author explores the dangerous bonds we can create with strangers and how past memories can cast long shadows over the present.

Review:

I was looking forward to reading this novel as I’ve read a few of Leuschel’s books before and thoroughly enjoyed them. The Memories We Bury was no different as I really liked the writing style and felt that I was really taken into the story and involved in what was happening.

The Memories We Bury is probably best described as a slow burner, but from the beginning I got the sense that something was very wrong. I had so many questions and I really wanted to know the answers and this kept me engaged until the end.

Leuschel’s characters are brilliantly constructed and they really got under my skin. I learnt quite early on that I probably shouldn’t trust them but I became really frustrated (in a good way!) that Lizzie seemed to be in a situation where it was really hard to get out.

The novel does pick up pace towards the end and although I did guess some of the surprises, there is still plenty in the story to keep the reader on their toes.

The Memories We Bury is available from Amazon.
