Paul Gitsham: Deadly Truths

My review is written with thanks to the author for my copy of the book.

Blurb:

How do you solve a murder when you’re shut out of the investigation?

Young detectives, Robinson Ellington Foxe and Amy Kennard, don’t want to work at Coventry’s Moat Lane police station. Neither do their colleagues want them there. But it’s the last chance for two officers for whom doing the right thing has cost them their futures.

Despite a murder on their patch, they are lumbered with investigating a series of high-profile burglaries. But when a thief is killed in the house of an influential businessman, Foxe and Kennard are convinced it is linked to their cases and want in.

The official investigation is a whitewash, but Robbie and Amy keep investigating anyway. As they uncover a web of deceit and corruption, reaching to the very top of the force, their own difficult histories are weaponised against them, and they find themselves fighting for their careers and their lives.

Review:

I always love the start of a new series, so I was very excited when Paul Gitsham asked me to read Deadly Truths. I’ve not read the DCI Warren Jones series but I did enjoy The Aftermath, so I had high expectations that were met and more!

Deadly Truths introduces us to DS Robinson Foxe and DC Amy Kennard. They both left their previous positions under a cloud so they do find it difficult to integrate themselves into the team. I was really intrigued to find out what had happened before and their characters both kept me engaged throughout this novel and I am confident that they will do so as this series continues. They are an unlikely partnership but I love their relationship, how they look out for each other, share a sense of humour and they are determined to find the answers they need.

I would like to give a shout out to the analyst, Rosie. It’s great to see a disabled character who just gets on with her job and living her life – as it represents the reality for many disabled people that isn’t always shown in books or throughout society. She has a fabulous personality too and I hope we see more of her.

At the beginning of the novel, Foxe and Kennard are assigned to a number of burglaries in an affluent area of the city. The plot begins as quite slow burning to allow the partnership between them, but as the story develops it bursts into life and has a little bit of everything! I loved the tension, jeopardy and sense of danger that had my swiping my Kindle as fast as I possibly could!

The novel ends on a bombshell and I can’t wait to see how the characters develop from here.

Deadly Truths is available from Amazon.
